The Big Bang Theory is one of the most popular American sit-coms on TV, with legions of fans following the fortunes of Sheldon, Leonard and Penny plus the rest of the quirky gang of misfits. One of the things that intrigues people most about the show is the seemingly never ending supply of Sheldon’s t-shirts.
The first big question is why Sheldon’s Big Bang Theory t-shirts are always worn over a long sleeve shirt, when Pasadena enjoys a warm, Mediterranean climate with highs of 18o in winter and 31o in summer. (It’s even more baffling why Leonard always wears a hoodie and a jacket when it’s so hot there.)
8Ball have a huge range of Big Bang Theory t-shirts, many with fascinating stories behind them. Here are just a few of our favourites:
Sheldon’s No 73 shirt
The number 73 shirt features Sheldon’s favourite number. Sheldon explained that “73 is the 21st prime number, it’s mirror 37 is the 12th, its mirror 21 is the product of multiplying (hang on to your hats) 7 and 3.” Raj, however, was unimpressed, claiming that 5318008 was better because it spells Boobies backwards on a calculator!
Moods of The Green Lantern
One of Sheldon’s favourite t-shirts is his Green Lantern t-shirt, designed after the popular comic book, and less than popular movie, of the same name. With several different colours for the ‘lantern’ shirts representing different emotions, one theory suggests that Sheldon’s choice of shirt is a clue to his mood that day. The colours include: red for anger, orange for greed, yellow for fear, green for courage and blue for hope. With Sheldon’s obsessive ways, you know he doesn’t do anything at random, so this could easily be true.
The Flash
The Flash, Sheldon’s favourite comic book character, is part of the Justice League of America, the group of superheroes that the Big Bang gang dress up as for Halloween. Sheldon uses his Flash powers to run to the Grand Canyon to scream about Leonard in series four’s Justice League Recombination.
Test Pattern shirt
Another recurring favourite is Sheldon’s test pattern t-shirt. This shows the test card used in American television, which is similar to ours but without the little girl and creepy clown doll. (Incidently, that ‘little girl’, Carole Hersee, is now 55).
Bazinga!
Not a Sheldon t-shirt, so much as his catchphrase for when he is being the self-titled ‘fun leader’ of the group. Bazinga! did not appear until the final episode of season 2. However, it really took off in one of the funniest ever scenes, in episode 14 of series 3, when Sheldon takes to the ball pool to escape from Leonard.
8Ball have plenty of other Big Bang Theory t-shirts inspired by classic episodes too, including the Friendship Algorithm from season 2, Sheldon’s Scanners inspired mind control t-shirt from series 1 and our own Shelbot t-shirt from the famous episode where Sheldon decides to retire from the world and send a robot our in his place.
As the latest series continues on E4, there are still lots of questions to be answered, especially regarding the relationships between Leonard and Penny, and Sheldon and Amy. Where do you think the storylines will lead? Give us your predictions in the comments section below.
